Over the years I’ve heard many opinions over the benefits of Cross drilled and Slotted Brake rotors in comparison to stock rotors. Let me tell you that the advantages greatly out way the disadvantages. The practice of Slotting or drilling rotors is technology that was developed from racing to diminish weight and stopping distances. In racing, weight is everything and yes, slotted or drilled rotors are slightly lighter than a stock rotor but the minimal weight savings will make very little or no difference in the braking performance of a heavy road vehicle. The benefit I’m talking about is the reduced stopping distance. Well the know it alls reading this article are going to say ha! There isn’t a big difference in stopping performance between a stock rotor and a Slotted or Drilled Rotors. Well, I’m going to prove them wrong.
Drilled and Slotted Brake Rotor Facts
Drilled and Slotted rotors have more grip – Stock rotors not as much
Holes and slots help air ventilation and heat dissipation. Rotors will run cooler and cool off faster – Stock rotor will over heat sooner and stay hot.
Slots increase brake pad bite – Stock rotors do not.
Note: The misconception out there is that slotted rotor will heat up because of the added bite and the rotors will over heat. Yes this is true under repetitive use such as on a racetrack or slowing down a heavy load down a steep hill, and the rotors do not have sufficient time to dissipate the heat. You need heat for the brake pads to work. The trouble is when there is too much heat, the increased bite provided by the slots will raise the brake pad temperature slowing down the vehicle sooner, and thus you don’t need to be on the brakes as long.
Holes and slots Decrease Wear – Another misconception is that the slots and holes will wear out the pads quicker. Yes this can be true if you use cheap brake pads that have a low working temperature. The reason is that for every 100 degree increase over the brake pads operating temperature, the pad wear is doubled. So for example if the pads can only withstand 300 Degrees and your brakes are running at 400, then the pads will start to wear quickly. If you buy a set of Performance rotors you need to also purchase a set of good performance pads. This will insure longer life of both rotors and Pads.
Holes and slots eject water and prevent Brake Pad hydroplaning – Stock rotor can hydroplane in bad weather.
Holes and slots vent gas during brake fade – Stock rotors will fade if the brake pads out-gas.
Drilled and Slotted rotors are lighter – No real advantage over a stock rotor on a road vehicle.
Drilled rotors are more prone to crack – Well Stock Rotor can crack too if exposed to excessive thermal shock (Fast Heating and Cooling).
Note: SP Performance Rotors have an Exclusive Sinusoid curved chamfer that is designed to relieve the stress formed at the edge of the hole to prevent cracking.
Drilled and slotted Rotors have less surface area – Yes Stock Rotors have more surface area but the added grip and cooling provided by the holes and slots, compensate for the reduced surface area. Note: More is not always better. Stay away from Drilled Rotors that have so many holes that they look like Swiss cheese. Not only is the surface area of the rotor been excessively reduced, but structural integrity of the rotor can also be compromised.
Drilled and Slotted Rotors are more expensive – Not really. You can often purchase a good set of Drilled and Slotted Rotors at the price you would pay for stock rotors at the dealer. Note: I mean a good set of performance rotors, not the imitation bargain rotors. What do you mean by imitation performance rotors you say? Well, most of the inexpensive performance rotors found today on the internet or eBay, are what I call imitation performance rotors. These are cheap, low grade rotors that are drilled and slotted to give you the look, but really not the performance. These are low quality rotors with holes or slots. Remember the old saying, “You get what you paid for.”
Ok, durability, cooling, and more grip is all good, but that is not what is important. The important fact is that performance rotors will reduce stopping distance. Let say with stock rotors it takes your vehicle 30 feet to come to a stop form 30MPH. Then, let’s say a set of good high performance rotors will give you a performance gain of 30%. In 30 feet that will be a difference of 3 feet. Those 3 feet can be the difference of your front bumper not slamming into the rear bumper of the car in front of you.
Cross Drilled and Slotted Rotors provide the combined benefits of both drilling and slotting. So consider spending just a bit more now and save, save, save in the long run.

The only thing worse than totaling your shiny Polaris Ranger RZR when you leave a jump and end up looking straight at the ground on the way down is knowing that you could have prevented it with the right equipment. There are a ton of Polaris RZR bumper options out there and sometimes the immense selection can make a decision difficult, especially on an aftermarket piece that can vary widely in price. Never fear, this month’s product comparison will give you an excellent idea of what to look for when shopping for the RZR bumper that can potentially prevent serious damage to the entire front end of your machine.
Simple is often the best solution, and Trail Armor’s Polaris RZR Front Bumper makes an excellent case for the simple solution. At just over $300, the Trail Armor bumper is constructed of serious 1 ¾” steel tubing for excellent strength and black powder coat that is corrosion resistant for protection from brutal winter road salt and vehicle chemicals that can be disastrous for regular paint. This bumper mounts directly to the vehicle frame and protects the radiator by not bolting to the radiator support. The tubular construction gives the bumper a rugged look while blending seamlessly with your RZR’s cage. This bumper also accepts Polaris’ factory winch mount and includes two welded light mounting points to mount the off-road lighting system of your choice.
The Polaris Front Deluxe brush guard provides complete protection for your RZR’s front end. Your headlights, grill, and fenders will all remain safe from light impacts with this corrosion resistant steel guard installed. This bumper is unique in its design, using the existing mounting holes in the RZR’s frame. It can also be used in conjunction with any winch or plow system, and you can even purchase a matching bumper for the rear. For a front bumper that is equally strong, and also offers an integrated skid plate and headlight protection, consider the DG moto plate aluminum front bumper. A great alternative to heavier steel bumpers, this bumper’s skid plate offers complete protection for the front end and front undercarriage in a beautiful, polished aluminum finish.
If you love that sporty baja look and like the simplicity of an integrated lighting kit, Polaris also offers an RZR pre-runner front bumper with two 35 watt halogen lights and a complete wiring harness. This bumper also mounts to the existing holes in the frame for easy installation, and can be used with your winch or plow system. All of this for around $325!
Warn Industries is best known for its winches, and the high quality of all of its products. Their Polaris RZR Front bumper is no exception. Made from 1/8″ thick laser-cut steel, the bumper’s contour closely follows the RZR’s lines. With the ability to mount a winch or plow system, it also offers unmatched versatility. It mounts to the existing bumper, and folds forward to easily access the under-hood compartment. Check out the picture of this bumper at the top of this article for the toughest look you can find anywhere.
Of course, the rear of the RZR is often forgotten, but frequently damaged by low-lying rocks and debris, and should you be unfortunate enough to find yourself flipping end over end (hey, it happens), the cage is completely insufficient to protect your rear fenders and headlights. Easy solutions are offered by Tusk and Trail Armor. Both are sufficient to protect the body, lights and vulnerable drivetrain. We like some added utility from our rear bumper, and there are multiple frame extensions available that mount to the rear frame as well as the upper rear cage. The added strength is always a nice way to tighten up the frame, and Tusk offers a frame extension that includes a rear cargo rack with an integrated Spare Tire Carrier for around $350.
You spent lot of hard-earned cash on your new RZR. Don’t skimp on the few accessories that can both improve the look of your RZR and protect it’s most vital and expensive components. Get yourself the heavy duty Polaris RZR rear bumpers that your machine never should have left the showroom floor without!

Whether you need welding gear for a DIY project or for a larger professional job, it is equally important to make sure you choose the correct equipment. Getting the right welding gear will allow you to complete a high quality job in as little time as possible, while also taking into consideration other vital factors such as the safety of you and others around you when you are undertaking the job.
Welding generally requires you to make use of a very hot flame and it does require a certain amount of skill, which just goes to show how important it is to choose the correct equipment. For example, if you are just starting out in welding or you want equipment that will be fairly easy to transport, oxyacetylene welding equipment could be something for you to consider.
This is based on a technique that used to be used in jewellery making in the 19th century. However, back then a combination of oxygen and hydrogen was used to weld metal. Now, a mix of acetylene and oxygen is used and it can create flames up to 6000 degrees Fahrenheit. One thing to note with this sort of welding equipment is that it is typically only suitable for thin sheets of metal – if you need to join thicker sheets then you might like to consider a different type of welding machine that will do the job more successfully.
Another benefit of this type of welding equipment is that it is cost efficient and can be used on the vast majority of metals, meaning that it is very versatile and suitable for a range of applications. However, it is not the only type of welding equipment available and so if you don’t think it will meet your needs you could consider the other options.
For example, arc welding (sometimes known as stick welding) is also a popular solution, although this does require you to have considerably more welding skill than the oxyacetylene alternatives. One of the benefits of this type of welding equipment is that you can use it on thicker sheets of metal, as well as on surfaces that are rougher and unsuitable for welding with oxyacetylene equipment. Stainless steel is a material that is commonly welded using arc welding, which also involves a flux that is melted to create the join between the pieces of metal.
From all of this, we can identify some crucial elements that you need to consider when choosing which type of welding equipment to go with as there is no ‘one size fits all’ solution. This means you need to think about factors such as the type of metal you will be welding, how thick it is, where the weld will be, the roughness of the material and how long you have got available to spend on your welding.
If you are unsure which type of welding equipment to use, it is always best to seek professional advice to make sure you get the right equipment. This will help you ensure a high quality finish every time, as well as equipment that you should be able to work without too much difficulty.
Like many, Graham Baylis has carried out his share of DIY, and like most he has found that correct welding tool is so very important. So you know you need the right kit, but where do you get it. One answer lies in the http://toolstoday.co.uk website.

Garmin and Suzuki have entered into an agreement which will equip most of the Japanese automaker’s 2013 models with a fully integrated infotainment system by Garmin. The system will be available in most of the Suzuki models launched in the US, and select models in Australia, New Zealand, Europe and Russia. The system will be displayed at the 2012 New York Auto Show.
Previously, Garmin has supplied the navigation component of Chrysler’s UConnect infotainment system. It has also sold portable navigation units to Suzuki and Nissan. However, this is the first time that the company would be installing a complete, in-dash infotainment system in car models.
The Key Features
The factory-installed infotainment system boasts a 6.1-inch in-dash touch screen and CD player with AM/FM radio. It provides car owners with several connectivity options such as internal flash memory and USB, auxiliary port and Bluetooth. Car owners can enjoy Bluetooth hands-free calling, audio playback and Bluetooth audio streaming. The SD card slot can be used to store digital audio files or map updates.
Some other key features of the system include back-up camera support, Pandora radio and advanced voice control. According to Matt Munn, Garmin’s automotive OEM group managing director, “By leveraging our long-standing experience in developing navigation software, user interfaces and hardware design, we created an integrated system that is easy to use and makes driving more enjoyable.”
In case a GPS is unavailable, such as when driving in a tunnel or an enclosed area, Garmin’s navigation system can provide location information and details by accessing vehicle speed sensors. The system also offers full integration with smart phones. The Garmin Smartphone Link application can also sync with Android phones via Bluetooth and provide drivers with real-time traffic, weather and fuel price updates. The navigation system of Garmin has a voice command system, which allows drivers to enter full addresses and select an audio source to access other functions. Garmin’s PhotoReal Junction View provides lane guidance and can also display information related to traffic and speed limit. The data menu screen is customizable and can display several options, such as direction of travel, estimated time of arrival and distance to destination, on the screen. Updated versions of maps are also available for downloads from the Garmin Web portal.
How much is it?
There has been no formal announcement about the possible pricing and exact availability of the system in Suzuki cars. It is expected that the Grand Vitara, which costs $19,499 onwards, will be the highest priced model featuring this infotainment system along with it’s oem Suzuki rims (most people choose 17 inch rims), keyless starter and leather seats which are often fitted by car owners on the Grand Vitara.
Garmin, a global leader in satellite navigation, has recently opened new offices in China, Japan and Germany to be closer to the leading car manufacturers and automotive suppliers of the world. By providing dedicated support in sales, marketing, product development and engineering, Garmin would be further able to cement its position as the strongest player in satellite navigation.

The design of the Dodge Intrepid can be associated with an original, aerodynamic exterior design for a new sedan named the “Navajo” in 1986. This was also about the time, that the Chrysler Corporation bought Italian manufacturer Lamborghini. The conclusion of this interesting sequence of events was the re-generation of the design of the “Navajo” and which eventually evolved as the “Lamborghini Portofino”. The design was acknowledged for its innovation at the Frankfurt Auto Show in 1987 and was the inspiration for Chrysler’s exterior design, known as “Cab Forward”.
Records show that the first automatic transmissions were developed by General Motors during the 1930′s. They were reputedly introduced originally in the 1940 model Oldsmobile as the “Hydra-matic” transmission. During World War II, this transmission type was incorporated in tanks built by General Motors. Following the end of the war, they were marketed as being “Battle Tested”.
The concept of a Transmission Control Module (TCM)is that controls for related functions are regulated by an onboard computer, transmitting data relating to vehicle performance to a central diagnostic system for analysis and activation. This includes information gathered by the TCM. The driver does not have the responsibility of shifting gears and the vehicle is able to perform to maximum capacity in the variety of conditions encountered in motoring. The automatic transmission, automatic gearbox, or a “Straight-shift” is a particular type of transmission that changes gears remotely, while the vehicle is in motion. Most automatic transmission types, have pre-determined gear changing sequences. These are frequently constructed with a parking feature, enabling the locking of the output shaft of the transmission.
The advantages and benefits to motorists provided by a TCM has been proven the world over and in hugely varying and adverse driving conditions. When related to the Dodge Intrepid, this was a transmission inspired by the Audi and ZF automatic systems. They were reportedly heavily reliant on various concepts, applied in the Chrysler A604, or 42LE. However, in the 1990′s period, a decision was made that a new and advanced car, required a technologically advanced engine. Among the various changes to the 3.3 L push-rod V6 engine that was selected, was the block, for the second generation Dodge Intrepid, being recast in aluminum as part of the upgrading process!
Apart from the involvement of the Dodge Intrepid TCM with the automatic gear shifting, there are also other varieties of automated transmissions, for example, continuous variable transmissions (CVT’s) and semi-automatic. They all allow the driver to be reliant on the onboard computer to affect the required gear changes, to meet present driving conditions. Although there are similarities between automatic transmissions and other types, there are significant differences in their internal operation and the driver’s own particular motoring sensations. When purchasing a vehicle, it is generally recognised that a manual gear shift will form the basis of the vehicle, with automated transmission an option. However, the facility for manual gear shifting, generally by using “paddle-shifter”, may be found on certain automated transmissions.

It’s safe to say that a car manufacturer probably doesn’t want to land on a list of the least dependable car brands. J.D. Power and Associates, an organization targeting car consumers, recently compiled a list of the least dependable car brands for 2012. The rankings are based on a survey conducted in the fall of 2011 of more than 31,000 owners of 2009-model cars and trucks to document their concerns regarding vehicle quality. Here are ten vehicles that have the dubious distinction of being the least dependable car brands for 2012.
1. Chrysler/Dodge
Chrysler, once known for quality, actually ranks just behind Dodge when actual scores are compared. Both vehicles share the same transmissions, engines and platforms. It’s only the skins that differ. To be fair, these are the 2009 models produced during the height of possible bankruptcy issues. This may have had a negative impact on quality that could have been corrected – or at least improved upon – in later models. In fact, a recent Wall Street Journal report suggests that the car maker is working to boost quality for its 2013 models, starting with the Dodge Dart.
2. Jeep
While still not showing an impressive quality ranking, the Jeep brand has improved over its previous ranking. The company made some internal changes in 2009, including tweaking the engine and boosting fuel-economy. Otherwise, no new or redesigned models were introduced. Common quality issues on the 2009 models included poor electrics, leaky transfer cases and transmission issues. Surprisingly, Jeep owners seem willing to embrace these like quirks as part of the experience of being a Jeep owner. Yes, it’s a Jeep thing.
3. Ram
In 2009, this was known as the Dodge Truck. Today, it exists under the Ram banner. The 2009 model was described has having a ‘bolder styling” and a stronger Hemi V8. Leaf springs were replaced by a new coil suspension. Despite these improvements, the Dodge Truck continued to suffer from transmission issues and drive-line vibrations. The cargo version of the Grand Caravan also falls under the Ram brand, but doesn’t do the brand any favors. Common issues include air conditioning and electrical issues. Price discounts are likely responsible for impressive sales figures.
4. Jaguar
This is one brand making a noticeable drop in quality from the previous ranking. Just a decade ago, the Jaguar led the industry in terms of quality. Since then, numerous electrical issues in previous generation models have quickly changed that status. Even just a few years prior to 2009, the Jaguar had maintained relatively high rankings. In 2009, the car maker retired the entry-level X-Type and the S-Type due to poor sales and replaced them with the XF sedan. Unfortunately, the expensive new brand has some of the classic faults of the Jaguar brand. This includes transmission issues and problems with some of the high-tech features on the vehicle.
5. Infiniti
Nissan’s luxury brand didn’t exactly have a stellar start in the ’90s, but the 2003 G35 sedan fared much better. Infiniti actually earned a rep for performance with its VQ35DE V6 engine and other standout features. Infiniti customers haven’t really voiced too many complaints, at least when compared to other brands online. So why the reason for the slip? It appears to issues with upgrades and other design touches that caused the brand to drop in quality ratings.
6. Volkswagen
The German automaker hasn’t really earned a rep as far as dependability goes. It looks like that could be changing. While VW still ranks among the least dependable brands, it actually improves over previous rankings. German engineering may not be set to truly dominate anytime soon, but the car maker is making an effort. The 2009 Rabbit earned praise because of its 2.5 L inline five cylinder engine and the 2.0 L TDI turbo-diesel four. Unfortunately, the 200-hp 2.0 L turbo gasoline four is double-edged sword. It has features drivers tend to enjoy, but its glitches can be downright frustrating. Add to that low battery life and it’s clear to see that there’s still work to do.
7. Kia
Only one new model was introduced in 2009, otherwise the automaker rolled over its previous models. This may account for some low dependability scores for a brand that usually ranks pretty well. The problem here seems to be a lack of updates from the previous model year. Old designs aren’t subjected to new assembly techniques. The result is a drop in performance by default. Word is that upgrades are planned for future models. This may kick Kia off this list eventually. Time will tell.
8. Suzuki
The Japanese brand has had a hard time earning major brand recognition and consumer loyalty. However, owners of Suzuki cars don’t really have a lot of major complaints. In fact, Grand Vitara and SX4 compact owners are usually pretty happy with their vehicles. The automaker is working to expand its model range, which could take it off this list in the future as long as the quality holds up. It appears to be more of an image problem than actual mechanical or performance issues that placed this brand on the list.
9. Mazda
Mazda, on the other hand, doesn’t have much of an image problem. Plenty of people have heard of Mazda. So what’s the issue then? The B2000 truck and Mazda 323 continue to earn praise. Even the “zoom zoom” advertising slogan is a hit. Mazda owners have complained about issues with automatic transmissions, air conditioning and electrical issues. Premature rust is another common complaint. Poor suspension has been an on-going problem with the Mazda 5 mini-minivan. This leads to issues with the tires and shocks. The Japanese automaker only added one completely new model in 2009, the Mazda 6 sedan. On the plus side, it is this one new model that has earned praise for its style and reliability.
10. Mini Cooper
Styling and handling remain desirable traits of this brand. Owners love the retro interior and other design selections. Worn clutches, oil leaks, problems with air conditioning, electrical glitches, issues with timing belts and carbon build-up and other engine problems really take away from any positive points. Great styling can’t mask performance issues. The motor has parts crafted by French automaker Peugeot and German automaker BMW. Maybe that’s part of the problem.
The results are found in the 2012 Vehicle Dependability Study. The news, overall, is good for the car industry. When compared to results from the previous study, 25 of 32 car brands improved their scores, with only six slipping. A big issue spanning most brands on this list appears to be lack of updates from the previous model year. With many of these same brands planning major upgrades with future models, this list is likely to reflect that trend.
