You may be tempted to use the same four-stroke or two-stroke oil in your boat as the one you use in any of your other vehicles, but this is one costly mistake that is easy to avoid. Read on to find out why.

Your Boat and Watercraft Require Specialized Marine Lubrication, Not Just Any Motor Oil

The needs of a marine engine are not exactly the same as those of a car or other vehicle. For one, the environment is quite different. It isn´t the same to be on dry land than to constantly be surrounded by water in a humid environment. Also, the workload and demand of a boat´s engine is higher because it must propel the entire weight of the boat through the waters. This isn´t an easy task, a car can keep going with inertia because of the wheels but in the waters, the boat must fight against the water and push through them in order to stay in motion. All of these are factors that create the need for a special and reliable lubricant that can truly enhance and facilitate the task of marine engines.

Learn About the Best Lubricants for Your Marine Engine

All marine engines need lubrication care, created for their environment that is why it is important to always use a lubricant designed for that. However, just like there are different cars and models and specifications for each, there are also different types and kinds of marine lubricants. AMSOIL carries a wide variety of lubricants. Each created to meet the specific needs of each engine and type of watercraft. Select the Right Four-Stroke or Two-Stroke Marine Oil

One of the first things you need to determine is the type of engine that your boat has. There are two main classifications: four-stroke and two-stroke. In a previous post, we went into a little more detail on the needs of each and the difference, you can read about it, here. However, even between four-stroke engines, each has different needs and specifications when it comes to motor oil. The same goes for two-stroke engines. The following are examples of some of the best lubricants that are used by four-stroke and two-stroke engines.

Four-Stroke Oil

  • AMSOIL carries several four-stroke oils designed to not only lubricate and protect against friction but to also provide several additional benefits that will enhance the power, durability, and performance of your boat.
  • One example is the AMSOIL 10W-30 Synthetic Marine Engine Oil. This is one of the highest performance synthetic lubricants.  It provides excellent protection for marine engines that require a 10W-30 grade. It is compatible with most brands (such as Honda®, Mercury®, Yamaha®, Johnson®/Evinrude®, Bombardier/BRP®, Suzuki®, etc. ) that require that level of viscosity.
  • AMSOIL lubricants provide high demand advantages due to its reliable synthetic composition which is able to deliver immediate lubrication in all weather conditions and performance demands. It also delivers an outstanding film of rust prevention that keeps the engine safe against this nocive element that most marine engines are exposed to.
  • This outstanding synthetic marine oil also comes in a variety of oil grades such as AMSOIL´s 10W-40 Synthetic Marine Engine Oil and their 25W-40 Synthetic Blend Marine Engine Oil. All of which prevent rust, reduce premature failure due to friction, decreases wear and increase performance.

Selecting Two-Stroke Oil

Two Stroke marine engines tend to get a bad rep for increasing contamination and releasing more chemical waste into the aquatic environment. Although newer two-stroke engines have been less notorious for this, it also has a lot to do with the products you use and the type of lubrication you provide. Since two-stroke engines burn out fuel along with the oil it is important to be more cautious and aware of the kind of motor oil that you utilize for these marine engines. Make sure you read the owner´s manual and first determine whether your two-stroke engine requires an injector-safe oil or a pre-mix.

AMSOIL Two-Stroke Oil

  •  Injector-safe oil can be directly placed into the injector without having to previously mix it with fuel while pre-mix needs to be diluted into a specific ratio of fuel before being inserted into the engine. AMSOIL´s Synthetic 2-Stroke Injector Oil is an excellent option for engines that require injector-safe lubrication.
  •  HP Marine™: High Performance, Low Aquatic Toxicity is one of the best pre-mix lubricants that is also injector safe. This marine engine lubricant is formulated to reduce harm on the marine environment all while providing excellence in wear protection and maximizing performance.
